I was a little nervous about doing this tea because it has a very strong following - almost cult-ish - amongst some 52Teas fans. And since there is a small amount of Lapsang Souchong in this blend and since I've had some difficulty with going delicate with Lapsang Souchong in the past (well, some of those who have written tasting notes have suggested my Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire was too much smoke and not enough other flavors), I worried that I wouldn't achieve balance with this tea.
The original description goes like this:
Our Smaug tea is a blend of Dragon Well, cinnamon chips, a hint of lapsang souchoung (I only used a single ounce in five pounds of Dragon Well, just enough to give it a little smoky character), some cayenne pepper and organic flavors. It’s a fiery feast for your tastebuds!
I did go a little bit off the recipe with this tea. Instead of using cayenne pepper, I used a combination of smoked chili flakes and crushed aleppo pepper. I used a touch more Lapsang Souchong than the original - mostly because I didn't really find a really strong presence of smoke in the original and with this tea, I felt it needed a tad more smoke. But while I didn't go quite as delicate as the original, the smoke here is still faint.
Taster size is approximately 1/2 ounce.
